Kathmandu, Oct 12: Traffic police have stepped up road safety awareness campaigns across the Kathmandu Valley as the country's biggest festivals-Dashain- has officially begun and another major festival-Tihar- is round the corner.

With traffic volumes and passenger movement expected to surge notably during the festive season in the Valley, the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office has intensified efforts to prevent road accidents, ensure smoother travel and encourage responsible driving.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Suresh Prasad Kafle, also Chief of the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Office, shared that awareness programmes are being conducted at various locations across the Valley to minimize road mishaps and ensure safe and convenient travel for passengers.

According to the Office, the campaign has focused on busy passenger areas, major roads and key transport hubs.

Furthermore, police has paid a special attention to New Bus Park, Nagdhunga and Koteshwor areas where traffic police have scaled up surveillance to manage the festival rush.

The New Bus Park, spanning across 161 ropani, is a major departure point for long-distance public transport while Nagdhunga and Koteshwor are among the key entry and exit points of the Valley.

As part of the campaign, traffic police have been educating drivers and passengers travelling on both long- and short-distance routes about traffic rules, road safety and responsible behaviour on the road.

Police have also prioritized vehicle mechanical inspections and checks for driving under the influence of alcohol to minimize road accidents.

SSP Kafle said traffic police had further fortified their presence at major entry and exit points of the valley, combining traffic management with public awareness initiatives to reduce the risk of accidents during the festive period.

"Traffic police are always deployed on the roads. With the festive season now underway, we have intensified traffic safety awareness and public education programmes. Our primary objective is to reduce road accidents," he reaffirmed.

He argued that increased passenger movement during festivals would make safe vehicle operation, responsible driving and compliance with traffic regulations particularly important.

Moreover, the traffic police have prioritized preventive measures and public awareness to help avert potential accidents and ensure that passengers reach their destinations safely during the festive rush.
