Hetauda, Nov 7: Chief of the Bagamati Province, Deepak Prasad Devkota, has stressed that journalism should be practiced by rising rise above individual, organisational and political interests and standing by truth, facts and the public interest. 

Speaking at a festival reception organised by the Press Chautrai Nepal in Makwanpur today, the Province Chief stressed that independent, impartial and responsible journalism is essential for the strengthening of democracy. 

"Criticism is an essential part of journalism, it should be based on facts, a constructive approach and accountability," he said, adding that with the rapid growth of digital technology, challenges caused by mis/disinformation, fake content, and misuse of social sites have increased, further highlighting the essentiality of responsible journalism. 

Stating that ensuring press freedom and the safety of journalists is key responsibility of a democratic state, Devkota urged media organisations to take an active role in safeguarding the rights and interests of working journalists and promoting responsible journalism.

On the occasion, he extended his best wishes for Tihar, Nepal Sambat 1147, and the Chhath, expressing confidence that such festivals help strengthen social harmony, mutual respect, national unity and cultural identity.
