Energy Minister Shrestha pledges to ensure effectiveness of power supply
Kathmandu, Aug 18: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has expressed the commitment that the ministry would take effective measures to ensure regular supply of quality energy for domestic consumers.
Responding to the queries raised in today's meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR), Minister Shrestha informed that the task of expanding smart meters and substation automation system has gained momentum in the Kathmandu Valley and major cities.
"In order to manage the growing demand of energy in urban areas, the task of constructing and expanding new substations, and up-gradation of transmission and distribution lines has been taken ahead", Shrestha shared, adding, "Infrastructure building, including dedicated feeder along with reform measures have been taken ahead for reliable energy supply by mitigating voltage ups and downs in industrial areas".
The process of making the electricity distribution system stronger, more reliable, and of higher quality will continue steadily, Minister stated, noting that Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is prioritizing and utilizing available resources to improve the distribution system, and the positive results of this are gradually starting to appear.
Minister Shrestha clarified that even though Nepal earned Rs 29.32 billion by exporting electricity to India and Bangladesh in the fiscal year 2082/83, electricity exports alone cannot be considered the full success of Nepal's energy sector.
He explained that Nepal's hydroelectric production system mainly depends on river flow, which increases during the rainy season, resulting in higher production.
Since electricity production during this period exceeds domestic demand and there is insufficient infrastructure for internal consumption, it becomes necessary to export electricity to India and Bangladesh to prevent wastage.
During the dry season, production decreases, so there is still a need to import electricity from India, the Minister clarified.
