Kathmandu, Aug 24: Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment, Geeta Chaudhary, has said that a draft bill has been prepared to control infectious animal diseases and prevent billions of rupees in losses to the economy by controlling such diseases.
Presenting a bill for discussion in Monday's meeting of the Legislative Management Committee under the National Assembly, Minister Chaudhary said that the bill had to be introduced to reduce the negative impact of the disease on the economy. She said that diseases like 'bird flu' and 'lumpy skin' are also a problem in animal exports, and this law will resolve the problem after it is enacted.
Minister Chaudhary informed that though an agreement has been reached to export buffalo meat to China it has been stalled due to infectious animal diseases. 
Committee Chair Krishna Bahadur Rokaya said that the ministry should study the suggestions given by the lawmakers and move forward with the bill. He informed that a meeting will be held by calling subject matter experts and representatives of concerned bodies.
Ministry's Joint Secretary and Chief of the Animal Health Division Ramananda Tiwari said that the bill was drafted to systematize the agriculture sector, which contributes 24 per cent to the gross domestic production. This includes the animal husbandry sector that contributes a quarter of the total contribution from the agriculture sector.
