Election Commission urged to make timely reforms in election laws and procedures

Kathmandu, Aug 19: The Election Commission said that former Chief Election Commissioners and former election commissioners have suggested timely improvements in the existing election laws and procedures.

They made the suggestion at a discussions programme organised to gather suggestions on the reform plans the commission has been moving forward for election management after the newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner Man Bahadur Karki and two election commissioners assumed office.

In the discussion, suggestions on legal, technical, and managerial improvements in election management were taken, informed the commission's joint secretary and spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai.

Former Chief Election Commissioners and Commissioners congratulated the new leadership of the commission, expressing confidence that the new leadership will be successful in taking the commission to greater heights while maintaining the reputation it has achieved in conducting and managing elections in the past.

They pointed out that it is necessary to make timely improvements in election laws and procedures to address the recent challenges seen in election management, emphasizing the need to continue discussions with stakeholders, use the potential of information technology, and maintain a transparent work style.

The former chief election commissioners and election commissioners suggested enhancing the commission's institutional capacity and collaborating with relevant agencies according to the changing times.

On the occasion, Chief Election Commissioner Karki said that the current leadership of the commission is capable and committed to fulfilling its responsibility of conducting clean, independent, fair, and reliable elections. He mentioned that the experiences and suggestions of former officials would be important to further strengthen the institution and make election management more effective.

The discussion was attended by Election Commissioners Dr. Janaki Kumari Tuladhar, Sagun Shumsher JBR, Guru Prasad Wagle, Dr. Rajiv Subba, as well as former Chief Election Commissioners Surya Prasad Shrestha, Bhoj Raj Pokhrel, and Neelkantha Upreti, and former Election Commissioners Prof. Dr. Birendra Prasad Mishra, Bishwaman Shrestha, Jayaram Singh Bohara, Narendra Dahal, and Sudhir Kumar Shah, among others.

Chief Election Commissioner Karki and Commissioners Wagle and Dr. Subba assumed office on July 31.
